Cantril Ladder

One way to measure subjective well-being is the Cantrill ladder. It is also known as the Cantril Ladder of Life Scale.

Handley Cantril introduced it as “THE SELF ANCHORING STRIVING SCALE” on page 22 of his book “The pattern of human concerns” (1), and this happiness scale became widely known.

It is also famous for being used as an indicator in Gallup’s happiness survey. (2)

Using

In “The pattern of human concerns,” five types of questions are given as examples, but the most common ones are as follows

Imagine a ladder with 0 to 10 rungs.

0 is the worst possible state, and the 10th step is the best state.

Where are you now on the ladder?

Where were you in the past, and where will you be in the future?

Cantril says that asking questions not only in the present but also in the past and future can be used to find out where you were in the past and where you will be in the future.
