Positivity spills over to the people around you.
Originally titled “The Ripple Effect: Emotional Contagion and Its Influence on Group Behavior”, an experiment by Segal Barsade, Yale University.
From this paper, we can see that to increase the productivity of a group, we can force positive people into the group, even if they are acting. Moreover, it seems to be a good thing to reduce conflicts and improve the atmosphere. This paper was a good example of the importance of mood makers. An experiment was conducted to determine the propagation of emotions in groups and how they affect group work in terms of mood, individual attitudes, behavior, and group dynamics. The data for the experiment was collected based on self-reports as well as records made by observation by an external recorder. The results showed that emotional propagation had a significant impact on individual attitudes and group work. In groups where positive emotions were propagated, there was better cooperation, less conflict, and an increase in the amount of work that could be done when asked.
