Japanese are genetically predisposed to anxiety, says paper

sense of anxiety

Are Japanese people more anxious than Caucasians?

The original title is “Anxiety traits associated with associated with a polymorphism in the serotonin transportergene regulatory regi
on in the Japanese (anxiety characteristics associated with polyads in the serotonin transporter gene regulation region in Japan)”

They used 501 healthy Japanese subjects to determine the polymorphic region of the serotonin transporter gene (5-HTTLPR) in the Japanese population by using PCR to determine the frequency of alleles expressed differently from Caucasians. At the same time, they investigated how the 5-HTTLPR was related to anxiety, and asked 189 of the 501 subjects to rate themselves on anxiety and mood swings. The results showed that the short/short genotype, which is more common in Japanese, tended to have higher anxiety scores than the long/long and long/short genotypes, which are more common in Caucasians. Thus, people with the short/short genotype of 5-HTTLPR were found to have strong anxiety characteristics.

Simply put, Japanese people have genes that make them more prone to anxiety than Caucasians.

It’s natural to feel uneasy because we are Japanese. Let’s cut it out.

You may be able to avoid unnecessary anxiety by recognizing that “I have a gene that makes me prone to anxiety. You may be able to avoid unnecessary anxiety by recognizing that you have a trait that makes you prone to anxiety, no matter how trivial it may seem. It’s not your fault that you get anxious and depressed easily; it’s your genes that make you that way.
